Job Summary:

  • You will provide assessments to children
  • In your role as a Specialist Paediatric OT you will be visiting local as well as inner London schools, and delivering individual and group based therapy. You will be expected to follow already set up programmes, as well as implementing new programmes.
  • You will visit mainstream schools, specialist resource provisions within mainstream schools, as well as specials schools.
  • You will assess and treat children within the school environment.
  • You will be required to travel between sites using your own or public transport, although your own car would be preferred. An auto top-up Oyster card will be provided.
  • You will be taking daily notes, giving feedback to parents and teachers, and also screening and assessing new clients.
  • You should have post-graduate experience working with a range of children populations.
You must be able:
  • To work as part of the team to provide a comprehensive and co-ordinated range of specialist occupational therapy diagnostic, therapeutic and preventative services in school and community settings, which improve or maintain the health, function, learning potentials, independence and quality of life of children.
  • To autonomously manage a complex caseload of children aged 0-19 with a range of neurological, learning and developmental disabilities. This will involve specialist assessment and treatment of children with neurological and learning difficulties, co-ordination difficulties, sensory processing problems and attention and behavioural deficits maintaining associated clinical records.
  • To provide clinical support, training and supervision for junior staff and OT students.
  • To build upon the foundation of previous junior level experience and develop towards a highly specialist level of clinical expertise.

Job Specification

Qualifications
  • Diploma/degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Evidence of post graduate course/professional development registered with the Health Professionals Council
  • Membership of RCOT
  • Ongoing updating of knowledge which may or may not be accredited
  • Postgraduate training (at Masters level or equivalent) relevant to paediatrics
  • Membership of CYPF, SI Network UK and Ireland

Knowledge and Skills

  • Broad knowledge of current best practice in occupational therapy and children’s services.
  • Experience of applying the occupational therapy philosophy and process.
  • Experience of work as a children’s occupational therapist in a school setting
  • Knowledge of issues relating to the occupational therapy service in education, social services and the private sector.
  • Understanding and knowledge of current policies and procedures, professional code of practice and ethics.
  • Computer literacy and ability to complete literature searches for current research.
  • Basic/specialist knowledge of equipment related to paediatrics
  • Ability to work alone.
  • Ability to analyse professional and ethical issues.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance in relation to current best practice and develop skills accordingly.
  • Planning and decision making skills, problem solving and the ability to be analytical.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and Date Protection.
  • Understanding of personal health and safety responsibilities.
  • Able to use computer and access internet effectively.
  • Able to independently implement treatment and management plans for each child for home, school and therapy setting following comprehensive assessment and analysis of the child’s needs.
  • To effectively reflect, evaluate, implement and progress knowledge in relation to current best practice.
Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years post graduate experience of working with children with special needs.
  • Documented evidence of CPD
  • To be able to ensure Health & Safety issues are adhered to in relation to equipment and communication of such to parents/carers.
  • Maintaining and updating of knowledge and skills in relation to current practice for assessment and treatment of children with complex needs, implementing high quality intervention accordingly.
  • Previous paediatric experience at Specialist Paediatric OT level.
  • Introduction to paediatrics course.
  • Normal development courses.
  • Experience of standardised assessments used within paediatrics.
  • To be able to demonstrate knowledge development across several clinical fields.
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience of working in a constantly changing environment.
  • Completion of post competency levels
  • Experience of research and audit.
  • Experience of providing advice and support/supervision to junior staff/students.
